Reflecting on the last few years of my life, it's become clear to me that my chronic habit of juggling multiple projects wasn't just about exploring diverse interests. It was a safety net, a way to avoid fully committing to one path.
I used to believe that engaging in a variety of projects was a reflection of my wide-ranging passions, but the truth is, it was more about fear — fear of missing out and fear of failure.
The realization hit me: this scattered focus was a form of hedging. By not fully investing in any single endeavor, I was safeguarding against the potential failure of any one project. It's akin to the way some people date multiple partners at once, not out of a genuine desire for varied experiences, but because they fear they’ll pick the wrong partner.
Recently, I've come to understand that there's immense beauty and power in going all in on just one project. When you find something that aligns perfectly with your skills and passions, where you're valued and can make a significant contribution, it's one of life's greatest privileges.
Of course, in your early years, it makes sense to experiment, to dabble in various fields to discover what truly resonates with you. But there comes a time when you need to make a decision, to really focus and dive deep into that one project that ignites your passion. After all, how can you make a meaningful impact on any project if your efforts and attention are divided?
The decision to go all in is not an easy one. It requires a certain bravery to move past the urge to hedge. But do you even know what you are capable of when you direct all of your energy and focus toward a single goal?
This year, I look forward to finding out for myself.
Focus, for the win.
